Temptations

Question text:  I need an explanation about temptation in 1Cor.10:13.

Answer text:To be tempted – one may rejoice in that (James 1:2), since in temptation, by conquering it, one may achieve a higher and nobler manhood. It may mean here a temptation which is human, i.e., incident or common to man or a temptation adapted to human strength; such as man can bear. The words are added as an encouragement, to offset the warning “let him that thinketh,” etc. They are in danger and must watch, but the temptation will not be beyond their strength. A way to escape better, the way of escape. The word means an egress, a way out. In classical Greek, especially, of a way out of the sea. Hence, in later Greek, of a landing-place. The words with the temptation and the way of escape imply an adjustment of the deliverance to each particular case. To bear Not the same as escape. Temptation which cannot be fed must be endured. Often the only escape is through endurance. See James 1:12.In summary we might say that in Scripture temptation is there to prove our worth. Therefore one is to rejoice over them. Though the possibility of falling is there, there is always victory if we depend on Christ as He is faithful not to let us have a trial beyond one’s ability. Praise Him. It is a good exercise to study James ch.1 on the issue of trials and temptations as the whole chapter is allotted for the subject. On overcoming temptation, James tells us in the beginning of the chapter to ask God for wisdom, or in other words, pray over the issue. In the middle of the chapter James tells us to fall back on the Word and at the end of the chapter James tells us to get involved in practical Christian service, all of which will help us overcome temptations. May the Lord help us. To His name be glory.
